Spring Electrical Checklist: 7 Things to Check Around Your Home
As the days get longer and the weather begins to warm up, spring is the perfect time to tackle those home maintenance jobs that may have been overlooked during winter. Along with cleaning gutters and tidying the garden, it is also worth checking that your home’s electrical systems are safe, efficient and ready for the warmer months.
Here are seven electrical jobs to consider this spring.
- Check your outdoor lighting
With more time spent outdoors, make sure your exterior lights are working correctly. Check security lights, pathway lighting, deck lights and outdoor entertaining areas for damaged fittings, exposed wiring or bulbs that need replacing.
Spring is also a great time to install sensor lighting, improve security around your property or add outdoor lighting before summer entertaining begins.
- Test your smoke alarms
Smoke alarms should be tested regularly, not just when they begin to chirp. Press the test button, remove any dust and check the expiry date printed on the alarm.
If your smoke alarms are outdated or unreliable, consider upgrading to interconnected smoke alarms. When one alarm detects smoke, every connected alarm sounds, providing earlier warning throughout the home.
- Inspect outdoor power points
Outdoor sockets can be affected by rain, moisture, dirt and general wear. Check that all covers close properly and look for cracking, discolouration or other signs of damage.
Any power point used outdoors should be suitable for exterior conditions and protected by an RCD. If you regularly use extension leads for lawnmowers, tools or outdoor entertaining, installing an additional outdoor socket can provide a safer and more convenient solution.
- Prepare your cooling and ventilation
Before the warmer weather arrives, check that your heat pump, bathroom fans, rangehood and home ventilation system are operating correctly. Good ventilation helps control moisture, improve indoor air quality and reduce the risk of mould.
If a fan is noisy, ineffective or no longer working, spring is the ideal time to have it inspected or replaced.
- Review your switchboard
Your switchboard is responsible for distributing electricity safely throughout your home. Warning signs such as ceramic fuses, regular tripping, buzzing, burning smells or scorch marks should never be ignored.
Modern households place increasing demand on their electrical systems through appliances, heat pumps, induction cooking, EV chargers and solar power. A local electrician can assess whether your switchboard is safe and capable of supporting your current and future needs.
- Consider solar before summer
Spring is a great time to investigate solar power. Organising your solar installation now means you can take advantage of the longer, sunnier days ahead.
A well-designed solar system should be based on your household’s electricity use, roof orientation and future plans—not simply the number of panels that will fit. Battery storage may also help you use more of your solar energy during the evening or at peak electricity times.
- Book electrical work early
Spring often leads into a busy period for renovations, outdoor projects and pre-Christmas maintenance. Booking your electrician early can make it easier to complete your projects before summer.
